Happy Valentine's Day

To celebrate corporate luv day, here's a (very, very) short, uplifting story about love's triumph from my book, Trailer Park Fairy Tales. It originally appeared in a chapbook about Romeo and Juliet.

It is exactly 99 words long.

Verona: Hospital for the Insane

Her name, by chance, was Juliet.

"O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?" she would call into the hallway, her voice shattering like ruptured glass.

And Romeo would come, painkillers in hand, night after night, bringing solace for her distress.

In those moments, while he made sure she swallowed, they were together, as one.

And then came the time when she didn't call, so Romeo took her pills himself, quelling the storm within his own mind.

When Juliet finally wakened, she called. But Romeo never came.

With a bedpost, carved like a knife, Juliet broke her own heart.
